Parliament’s ad hoc delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs to Tunisia issued the following statement, following Tunisia’s refusal to let them enter the country.

“We condemn the decision of the Tunisian authorities to refuse entry to the delegation of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee and demand a detailed explanation. This conduct is unprecedented since the democratic revolution in 2011.

We continue to be ready for and insist on a dialogue, on critical issues, and remind that this Parliament has always approved the comprehensive cooperation agenda, including the strengthening of democracy and financial support as agreed in the EU-Tunisia Association Agreement.

We remain convinced, as demanded by the EU ever since July 2021, that the dire economic and social situation in Tunisia, further aggravated by the humanitarian crisis, urgently requires a comprehensive national dialogue, without which the prospects for stable political and economic development in Tunisia remain bleak.”

Background

The delegation was composed by its chair Michael Gahler (EPP, Germany), Dietmar Köster (S&D, Germany), Salima Yenbou (Renew, France), Mounir Satouri (Greens/EFA, France) and Emmanuel Maurel (The Left, France).

This visit was a follow-up to an Foreign Affairs Committee fact-finding mission to Tunisia in April 2022 when Parliament was concerned about political backsliding in Tunisia on democratic standards and human rights.
